No Leftovers

Where have you left God?

Taste and see that the Lord is good;” (Psalm 34:8a)

Have you ever opened the fridge and seen a plate of leftovers at the back? Maybe you looked at it and thought, Hmmm… I’ll eat something fresher first. Sometimes, leftovers are the last thing we want.

But, did you know we sometimes treat God like a leftover too?

We fill our days with many things, all of which can be good—school, homework, games, shows, and time with friends. We leave time spent with God to the very end of the day, when we are tired or distracted. This can feel like we are giving God our “leftovers.”

God is not a leftover. He is the most important part of our lives. He made us, loves us, and wants to spend time with us. When we pray and read the Bible, it is not just something to check off our list. It is a special time to know God better and enjoy being with Him.

Just as Psalm 34:8 tells us to “taste and see that the LORD is good", we need to spend time with God to understand how wonderful He is. Similar to how fresh, delicious food taste better than old leftovers, time with God can be joyful and fulfilling when we give Him our best.

So, is it time to make a change? Instead of putting God last, choose to spend time with Him first; whether this means in the mornings before school, or at quiet times in the afternoon, we can talk to Him, read His Word, and listen to His voice wherever He speaks.

God doesn’t want our leftovers—He asks for the best of our hearts.

Discussion Questions:

  • What are some things that take up most of your time each day?

  • When is a good time to give your best attention to God?

  • What is one thing you can do this week to spend more time with God?

Prayer in Words:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.

Thank You for loving us so much.

We are sorry for all the times we treated You like a leftover.

Help us remember that You are the most important part of our lives.

Teach us to enjoy spending time with You,

And choose a special time each day to pray and read Your Word.

Thank You for being so good to us.

Hallelujah, Amen.
